Brazilian guidelines for the management of candidiasis - a joint meeting report of three medical societies: Sociedade Brasileira de Infectologia, Sociedade Paulista de Infectologia and Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical BJID
Colombo,Arnaldo Lopes; Guimarães,Thaís; Camargo,Luis Fernando Aranha; Richtmann,Rosana; Queiroz-Telles,Flavio de; Salles,Mauro José Costa; Cunha,Clóvis Arns da; Yasuda,Maria Aparecida Shikanai; Moretti,Maria Luiza; Nucci,Marcio.
Candida infections account for 80% of all fungal infections in the hospital environment, including bloodstream, urinary tract and surgical site infections. Bloodstream infections are now a major challenge for tertiary hospitals worldwide due to their high prevalence and mortality rates. The incidence of candidemia in tertiary public hospitals in Brazil is approximately 2.5 cases per 1000 hospital admissions. Due to the importance of this infection, the authors provide a review of the diversity of the genus Candida and its clinical relevance, the therapeutic options and discuss the treatment of major infections caused by Candida. Each topography is discussed with regard to epidemiological, clinical and laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations...

Silva Júnior,João Manoel da; Rezende,Ederlon; Guimarães,Thaís; Campos,Edvaldo V. dos; Magno,Luiz André; Consorti,Lívia; Pereira,Renata Andréa Pietro; Nascimento,Maria de Lourdes; Mendonça,João Silva de.
Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is the most commonly-acquired infection in patients in intensive care units. We analyzed epidemiological and microbiological characteristics and the outcome, in a cohort of critically-ill patients with confirmed diagnosis of VAP. All patients who had been on mechanical ventilation (MV) for more than 48 hours were included in our study; material collection for microbiological analysis was done within the first 24 hours after beginning treatment or after changing antibiotics. There were 55/265 (20.7%) VAP cases diagnosed, at a rate of 21.6 episodes per 1,000 days of mechanical ventilation. Mean age of the patients was 66 years, with a mean APACHE II score of 26.7 + 7.0; male patients were more prevalent. The mortality...

High prevalence of hepatitis C infection in a Brazilian prison: identification of risk factors for infection BJID
Guimarães,Thaís; Granato,Celso F. H.; Varella,Drauzio; Ferraz,Maria Lúcia G.; Castelo,Adauto; Kallás,Esper Georges.
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) causes infectious hepatitis worldwide. It is transmitted mainly by blood products and sharing of intravenous paraphernalia during illicit drug use. High prevalence rates have been described among specific groups considered to be at higher risk for HCV infection, including prison inmates. The objectives of this study were: to determine the HCV seroprevalence among inmates of Casa de Detenção de São Paulo; to identify risk factors for HCV infection; and to compare the seroprevalence of HCV to other blood borne or sexually transmitted diseases. From December, 1993, to January, 1994, a total of 779 inmates were interviewed to collect information on sociodemographic status, sexual behavior, and past experience with illicit drugs. Blood...
